Welcome to Paulsen & Raterman Law

Meet Cody Raterman from Paulsen & Raterman Law in Sioux Falls, SD

Cody Raterman is a fourth generation South Dakotan who brings a deep understanding of the values that define the state and the challenges that many of its citizens face. As a former prosecutor and now a dedicated defense attorney, he offers a well-rounded and experienced perspective to individuals navigating complex legal issues. Cody is a graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law and a member of the South Dakota Bar. He has served as counsel in some of the most serious criminal matters in the state, including cases involving homicide, sexual assault, child pornography, and major theft. In addition to his criminal defense work, he represents clients in family law, juvenile matters, surrogacy arrangements, and involuntary mental health commitment proceedings. His approach to the practice of law is grounded in transparency, client trust, and a commitment to achieving meaningful results. Outside of his legal practice, Cody is a devoted parent and an engaged member of the Sioux Falls community. He takes pride in spending quality time with his children and is frequently found at local parks or community events with their dogs. Whether coaching, exploring trails, or simply enjoying a quiet moment outdoors, Cody values the same sense of presence and connection in his personal life that he brings to his clients and the courtroom. Cody Raterman brings more than just a law degree to the table. A former prosecutor and now a defense attorney and partner at Paulsen & Raterman Law, he has represented clients across South Dakota in cases involving serious felonies, family law disputes, juvenile defense, surrogacy, and mental health commitments. His education at the University of South Dakota School of Law provided the foundation, but it is his real- world experience and client-focused approach that define his work today.
